I like how each of the three rows of Sortegories represent some aspect of language – sound spelling correspondences, meaning and syntax. The activities reinforce students’ growing understanding of the layers of language that are inherent in words and sentences. This opportunity to build depth of word knowledge will improve fluency and ultimately improve comprehension.

Focus on sound-to-spelling associations and the position of sounds in words to develop essential foundational skills.
Improve accurate and automatic reading and spelling by segmenting words into syllables, then each syllable into its phonemes.
Help students transition to reading longer words by progressing from building and blending words with sound-to-spelling associations to building and blending with syllables.
Develop comprehension and depth of word knowledge by practicing the relationships between words including antonyms (opposites), synonyms (same), and homophones (same sound but different meanings).
Sort words into categories based on their meaning, building foundational skills including meaning networks and identifying the main idea.
Improve comprehension and decoding accuracy by using knowledge of word relationships, classification, and other skills to figure out a missing word in a sentence.
Boost comprehension and clear written composition by using morphemes, such as -ed, -ing, -er, and -est, to sort words – drawing attention to the impact of morphemes on word meaning.
Help students understand the meaning of what they read by focusing on sentence-level comprehension through exploring the function of words.
Build on Level A Phrase Building and Level B Grammar Sort, using cumulative skills – identifying the meaning of a phrase and identifying nouns that name people, places and things – to develop fluency and comprehension.
